Made of wonderfully patinated bronze.

Koro are used as incense burners, often filled with ash where incense sticks or cones can be placed and burned. They are usually designed so that the smoke can rise through an opening like the mouth here.

The casting is wonderfully detailed with a fantastic expression. He is holding a daifuku-cho or "big luck book" and his hand is raised like a maneki neko, so perhaps this koro represents prosperity.

At one point this would have had a hat covering the opening, this is now sadly lost to time. But never the less still presents as a wonderful sculpture. With the open top ive actually been using this to keep pens in!

Missing hat aside, in good condition, with a couple of patches of wear on the tail, the interior has been lined with some kind of mortar, presumably to stop it getting too hot if charcoal was placed in the burner.

Found in Northern Japan.

Measures 12cm tall.
Quite heavy for its size weighing 700g
