Which is a really decorative way of writing but makes it harder to read.
The kanji typically denotes the seller and sometimes the type of sake or the region.

We've had one of these Tokkuri on our shelf for years, they make a great display piece with the striking bold calligraphy. They can also be used for vases. Part of a collection we acquired in Kyoto on our buying trip in May 2026.

Off white glaze with Black overpainted calligraphy on a stoneware base.

Measures 27cm x 13cm

Has some rough patches to the sides where the bottles have stuck together in the kiln. Rather than a fault, I think these features add to the history and story of the piece. These are utilitarian objects and so small imperfections were not really seen as a problem. Its fits perfectly with the Wabisabi principle that we love at Kanso.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0843/2399/1857/files/Antique_Japanese_White_Ceramic_Tokkuri_sake_bottle-1.jpg?v=1783725750
