A type of Tabako pouch popular from the Edo period to the Late Meiji Era. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis example dates to the late 19th Century. Complete with original Pipe called a Kiseru, featuring Brass Ends on a bamboo tube. The Kiseru is stored in the Kiseruzutsu or pipe case. Also made from Lacquered Deer Skin.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDeer skin was more common than cows hide leather in Edo period Japan and favoured for its softness. Orginally the Tabako-Ire would have been covered in lacquer like the pipe case. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe best part of the whole set is the mae-kanagu, the decorative metal clasp that closes the Pouch. These evolved from the decorative Menuki on Samurai swords and became an art form of their own. \u003cbr\u003eSometimes we can find older Sword Menuki repurposed as mae-kanagu, particularly after the Meiji restoration of 1868 where the public carrying of swords were banned. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn this case, the mae-kanagu features a decorative lacquer box that is open, revealing a noh mask inside. \u003cbr\u003eOn the inside of the pouch on the reverse of the clasp, there are some maker marks and seal stamped into the brass.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOverall this is a curious historical artefact, It is old and warn looking, but still presents very well. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe pouch measures 12cm long x 7.5cm wide with the pipe at 22cm long x 3cm wide. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Kanso House","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57240028774705,"sku":"KHB207","price":185.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0843\/2399\/1857\/files\/Antique_Japanese_Tabako-Ire_and_Pipe-1.jpg?v=1793496552","url":"https:\/\/kansohouse.com.au\/products\/antique-japanese-tabako-ire-tobacco-pouch-with-kiseruzutsu-and-pipe","provider":"Kanso House","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
