In truth this is called a Tabako-bon or tobacco box and would have been used for holding smoking utensils, pipes and tobacco.

But the origins of the Tabako-bon are tied to the Traditional Japanese incense ceremony called Kodo.

It is thought that the Tabako-bon evolved from the tools used in the Kodo Incense ceremony. So in this day and age where smoking is much less common, this could be returned to its traditional origins and used to hold implements for incense!

A very fine quality Tabako bon made from Burl Keyaki with copper burner box. Dating to the Meiji Period, late 19th, early 20th Century.
With two drawers and an open slot above for pipes. A pipe is included with the box.
On top there is the large copper burner box which would have been filled with ash, on top of which would have been placed a piece of charcoal from which to light the pipe.

There is a round wooden tube container which is usually made of bamboo, in this case it is made of turned wood. This would have originally been to catch the ash from the pipe but can now be used to store incense sticks.

There is a fine bent wood handle attached to the box which would have allowed it to be brought into the room or carried between rooms in a traditional Japanese House.

The bottom drawers can be used to store short stick incense, lighters and other small objects.

The small white handles are likely made from Ivory or bone.

The box is in overall good condition, the ends of that hold the handle are different, One end has been replaced with a screw

Measures  21.5cm long by 16.5cm deep by 15cm
