In truth this is called a Tabako-bon or tobacco box and would have been used for holding smoking utensils, pipes and tobacco.
But the origins of the Tabako-bon are tied to the Traditional Japanese incense ceremony called Kodo.
It is thought that the Tabako-bon evolved from the tools used in the Kodo Incense ceremony. So in this day and age where smoking is much less common, this could be returned to its traditional origins and used to hold implements for incense!
DETAILS
- It has a bamboo container where incense sticks can be placed, ready to burn.
- Comes with a pretty ceramic koro or incense burner with a light blue glaze.
- Below the open top section is a drawer which can hold incense boxes, lighter or matches etc.
- The box also has a nice square handle so it can be carried around from room to room.

from 17 reviewsA face only a parent could love… such a beautiful piece, with the celadon green done no justice by a photograph alone. Packaged with care, arrived in a timely fashion. Perched on my bookshelf next to a wonderful sake bottle I purchased alongside it.

This is my second purchase from Kanso House and I was so pleased with the first I came back for another. I have always liked the figure and story of Daikoku and was so pleased to see this very fine figure listed. The size is quite impressive and very nicely carved and has a lovely patina. The package arrived quickly and very professionally wrapped. Plus a nice note was enclosed. Thank you both for this handsome figure to add to my collection.

This blend of sandalwood is perfection. Subtle and fragrant. Beautifully presented on delivery. Bravo

I was intrigued by this temple , its story, its simplicity. I am thrilled with it in my home .

A beautiful little sculpture . I love purchasing from Kanso House. Always an enjoyable moment when I unwrap the delivery. Perfection

Beautiful Japanese calligraphy box! Thank you 😊

We've had our Hinoki stool for a couple of months now and it still brings a lovely cypress smell to the bathroom. It's the perfect size to sit on and dries fully overnight, no issues with dampness. It's lovely craftmanship and well worth the money.

Absolutley adore this item and equally adore Kanso House . Will be watching closely and purchasing more from

I love my kyōtō andon solar lantern!
I was a student in Japan way back in 1976, and the inclusion of this lantern amongst the strappy green leaves of my intimate, meditative rear garden make me nostalgic for those halcyon days. The lantern oozes beauty, simplicity and the blending of traditional and contemporary sensibilities of Japanese design. I appreciate Daniel and Candice's keen eye for sophisticated and practical aesthetic. I'll be trawling through their generously stocked products for my next indulgent purchase ...
