A beautifully worn Japanese lacquer serving tray known as a 丸盆 (maru-bon). Crafted from turned wood and finished in hand-applied urushi lacquer, this piece embodies the elegant simplicity of everyday tableware from the late Edo to early Meiji period.
Early to mid 19th Century.

The interior is coated in a soft vermilion red, a colour traditionally associated with warmth and hospitality in Japanese dining. The exterior is finished in deep black lacquer, now gently softened by a century of use. The surface wear is honest and appealing—showing its history without compromising its strength or functionality. I love the way the red wears to reveal the black underneath.

On the underside there are two workshop marks, a typical maker’s tally used by lacquer craftsmen of the time rather than a formal signature. These marks help identify the piece as a utilitarian piece rather than an ornamental one.

This type of tray was used in, Inns and restaurants, as well as kaiseki and tea-house settings for serving small dishes, sweets, or tea bowls. Its understated form and warm red interior make it a beautiful piece for modern use or display.

It's quite a large tray measuring 36cm across and 4cm tall.
