In truth this is called a Tabako-bon or tobacco box and would have been used for holding smoking utensils, pipes and tobacco.
But the origins of the Tabako-bon are tied to the Traditional Japanese incense ceremony called Kodo.
It is thought that the Tabako-bon evolved from the tools used in the Kodo Incense ceremony. So in this day and age where smoking is much less common, this could be returned to its traditional origins and used to hold implements for incense!ย
The handle on Tabako-bon like this enabled the owner to carry it from room to room.ย
The top section contains multiple compartments, 1 large compartment which houses the stylish simple bronze koro (burner). Next to that are two smaller sections. One open section, which can be used to store incense and other larger items. And one smaller lidded compartment.ย ย
ย
Below the open top section are two small drawers, perfect for storing boxes of short stick incense, a lighter or matches and other small objects.ย
Made from Rosewood which has been prized in Japan since ancient times for its strength and rich colour. The interior compartments and small lid appear to be made from another wood, looks to me like chestnut.ย
The front features a stylised cutaway design on the front that is possibly meant to be floral but to me looks like the face of a shi shi temple lion!ย
In good condition, there is some slight separation on the finger jointed corners but this has been checked and is solid. ย
Measures 23cmwide x 17cm deep x 13cm tall (excluding handle)ย

They are SO GOOD
Lovely form, beautiful, rich patina, tactile. What's not to like?
We couldnโt be happier with our gorgeous carvings! A really unique addition to our home that we will forever cherish. They are a real talking point with guests too. Superb delivery and packaging. Weโll be watching Kanso House for other home gems,
This is a little gem, and in beautiful condition. A lovely little bit of Japan in my kitchen.
Kogo come in such a variety of styles and materials. A joy to see a group of them together. Thank you Kanso House!
I am excited to start using my LeSent body wash after waiting for my new ensuite to be completed. It was worth the wait! I love the silky texture and refreshing scent. It also stays in my hands instead of sliding onto the shower base like some brands. I will be ordering more from Kanso House.
I love the wonderful knobbly texture and intriguing colours created by the wood firing. You can see where the flames have touched the clay.
It is very pleasing to hold and contemplate.
And thank you for the delightful little origami bird surprise.
Very happy to get three very different designs that all harmonize together so perfectly. Will have to get out that special bottle of Sake that I had put away. Thank you Kanso House!
The charm of Japanese small dishes never fails to amaze. The various shapes and designs are pleasing and wonderful to use in so many ways. I love plants and these just hit the spot for me.
Beautuful Japanese simplicity & utility. Thank you Kanso House.
Packed with care
Love the form, love the decoration and it looks so good with a simple open camellia in it. Thank you Kano House!
These face washers are soft and comfortable to use.
They wash and dry very well too.
i have given 5 stars because the bucket is terrific
however, if it was bigger it would be super terrific
Itโs difficult to describe the magic of this little vessel. Its radial stripes are a match for a small brown limpet shell I picked up on the beach, and knew this would be a joy. Sort of places it in the cosmos. A long life of enjoyment I hope, in which the genmai tastes great.
