One for the collectors. This is an Early 20th Century Andon plate used for catching dripping oil or wax candles and oil burners placed inside Andon floor lanterns. This protected the lanterns and potentially stopped fires from occurring. Like most practical items in Japan these evolved into their own art form with an endless variety of designs.

See last image for an example of how they are used in a circular andon. The plate sits at the very bottom.

This is a beautiful Oribe example, featuring a hand painted horse design. The Character, I believe is Kotobuki which can translate to congratulations, long life, or best wishes. It is a common design to find on ceramics especially those given as gifts or celebrating new years.
With the combination of the horse design this piece was likely produced for new years celebrations in the year of the horse.

Likely made in the famous Seto Ceramic producing Region.

A shallow dish with a rim, It can be used as a serving dish, or purely decorative.
Found in Osaka.

Measures 20.5cm wide x 2cm high
