In truth this is called a Tabako-bon or tobacco box and would have been used for holding smoking utensils, pipes and tobacco.

But the origins of the Tabako-bon are tied to the Traditional Japanese incense ceremony called Kodo.

It is thought that the Tabako-bon evolved from the tools used in the Kodo Incense ceremony. So in this day and age where smoking is much less common, this could be returned to its traditional origins and used to hold implements for incense!

There are multiple compartments in the top section for various implements.
It has a bamboo container where incense sticks can be placed, ready to burn. Next to that is a small compartment that could house a small lighter or matches.

It comes with a pretty ceramic koro or incense burner with a light blue/green celadon crackled glaze. Might be nice as a vase too.

In the front section there is a narrow open compartment, this could also hold incense. It would have traditionally had a pipe or metal chopsticks for placing a piece of hot coal into the koro burner.

Below the open top section are two thin drawers. They are quite narrow so cant hold incense boxes as they are but could hold incense, matches or other small objects.

Made from Rosewood which has been prized in Japan since ancient times for its strength and rich colour.
Originally this would have had a handle to carry it from room to room but that has been removed, perhaps it broke or someone decided it was more elegant without and the holes on the side have been filled.
