Oribe glaze Komainu (guardian lion) by master craftsman Kato Usuke, Akisaka kiln, Seto ware

A wonderful mid 20th Century Seto ware Komainy or guardian lion. The Oribe glaze is a rich deep green over yellow which gives the appearance of aged bronze.

The style reminds me of Italian Bitossi ceramics of the 1960s, so it could be from a similar time period.

Kato Usuke (1915-1981)
Kato Usuke, a potter of Seto and Akazu ware, was born in 1915 as the son of Usaburo the 20th. With his ancestor being the second son of the father of Seto ware, Kato Kagemasa.
He is famous for his teabowls but also his ability to recreate ancient ceramic styles and techniques.
Usuke's works are engraved with his signature, "う(U)". He has held solo exhibitions in various parts of Japan, and the US.

Sourced from an Antique Dealer in Northern Japan.

Measures approx 20cm tall.

A lifetime of use

Patina

Patina is something earned over years of use and care, we like to leave it on as much as possible as it adds to the authenticity and story of each piece. Daniel has been restoring Japanese Antiques for 25 years, over that time he has learned both traditional and modern techniques for repairing and caring for treasured pieces.

Authenticity Guaranteed

All of our pieces are guaranteed original and authentic, each piece is researched to ensure our descriptions are as accurate as possible. We love history and discovering all about the artefacts we uncover for you.
