Seto Ash Glaze Sake Cup by Kato Shuntō

A hand-formed ochoko in the Seto tradition, made at the Ryū-gama kiln in Akazu-cho, Seto. Squared form with gently flared rim.
Ash glaze in off-white with heavy crazing and iron-rich brushwork running down the body in deep rust and brown. The designs are painted in a variety of different patterns from simple stripes to the more geometric

The unglazed foot shows the course spotted stoneware clay typical of Akazu in the Seto region. Impressed artists seal mark to the base.

Kato Shuntō was designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage Property by Seto City for his ash glaze technique. He received a commission from the Imperial Household and was awarded the Grand Prix at the Brussels World Exposition. Works are held in permanent collections in America and Belgium.

Each cup is individual — dimensions and glaze character vary slightly piece to piece.
Please choose a size to see which cups are available in that size.

There are some size differences with these cups. So we created 3 categories.
Small cups are approx 3cm tall x 5.5cm wide
Medium cups are approx 3.5cm tall x 6cm wide
Large cups are approx 4cm x 6.5cm wide

Excellent vintage condition. No chips or cracks.

Patina

Patina is something earned over years of use and care, we like to leave it on as much as possible as it adds to the authenticity and story of each piece. Daniel has been restoring Japanese Antiques for 25 years, over that time he has learned both traditional and modern techniques for repairing and caring for treasured pieces.
