A fabulous cast bronze fish by renowned Japanese sculptor Kitamura Seibo.

Born in 1884 and dying in 1987, Kitamura Seibo was 102 when he died. Amazing in itself, but what makes this even more interesting is included in the box is a poem written by him that indicates he made this when was almost 100!

The poem reads:

Watching salmon roam freely in a mountain stream among green hills, as I near my hundredth year, I reflect on this again and again.

Salmon, Longevity, Thoughts of Return

The salmon returns to the river of its birth, carrying with it thoughts of long life.
Even after going out to the great ocean and growing to full maturity, the salmon never forgets the river where it was raised.
A salmon’s life is a repeated journey home.
I wish human affection could be like this too.

The fish is in perfect condition, it has likely spent most of its life protected in the presentation box that bears the artists seal and description that reads: "Salmon: longevity and thoughts of returning home" Perhaps it was given to someone that was leaving for a long trip or moving away.

The box has a small amount of damage on the inside at one end as shown. Included are the poem and a slip including a list of achievements and milestones of Seibo's career.

Measures 21cm long x 15cm wide, quite heavy!
