Vintage Japanese tiny pottery Jizo figure -Nigiri Botoke

A charming little Jizo figure in pouch. The accompanying text describes this as a sort of worry doll, a Jizo to hold and bring comfort and calm when life gets a little too much and some reflection is needed. 

Small Jizo like this are called Nigiri-Botoke, meaning pocket Buddha. Designed to be carried, rather than placed on a shelf. Interestingly there is a small piece of paper inserted inside the jizo, held by tape. That must contain some kind of prayer or talisman. Mysterious!

Measures just 4.8cm tall 

The main text reads as follows:

If a person harbours resentment or hatred, they may become ill in spirit and body.
If there is something that can calm the heart, that suffering can be eased. For this reason, as one small help for the heart, we have made this Nigiri-botoke.

This is not merely religious.

When adults and children hold this small, gently shaped Buddha in their hands, the tactile sensation helps calm the mind and bring peace.
It is said that this physical sensation of holding something can help control the spirit and emotions.
Today, even for just a moment, please spend your time quietly and peacefully.

You may place it in your pocket or among your small belongings and carry it with you.
Then, whenever you feel “now is the time,” hold the Nigiri-botoke in your hand.
While feeling it in your palm, quietly recite your favourite words or prayers within your heart. “…My guardian Buddha.”

With the feeling of making a wish, may you naturally find yourself able to face anything.
