The Tanuki shaped like a teapot is an image from a famous Japanese Folk tale called Bunbuku Chagama about a shapeshifting tanuki that turns itself into a tea pot, only to reveal its head and arms when it is placed over a fire. It rewards the travelling merchant who rescues it and looks after it.

This curious object is a smoking set with ash tray and under an iron lid, an anodised compartment for storing smoking implements. It features the head and tail of the Tanuki on top and on the bottom you can make out the faint design of the legs.
Dating to the early to mid 20th Century.

As with most smoking implements these days, I think this would be really nice as an incense burner or container for incense. It could also be used as a vase.

A curious object with a great story.

Made from cast iron, This is Nambu Tekki, Ironware from Iwate prefecture in Northern Japan.
The surface has a brown rusty appearance, but has been oiled to protect it and stop it rusting further.
There is a small area of damage above one eye of the tanuki head.

Measures 18cm across x 10cm tall

Patina is something earned over years of use and care, we like to leave it on as much as possible as it adds to the authenticity and story of each piece. Daniel has been restoring Japanese Antiques for 25 years, over that time he has learned both traditional and modern techniques for repairing and caring for treasured pieces.
