Small contemporary Natsume timber and lacquer sake cups.
Mix and match with two colours available.
The red lacquer is called Negoro where red lacquer is applied over black and then rubbed back to reveal some of the black.
Negoro lacquer derived its name from the Buddhist temple of Negoro-ji, located in the mountains of present-day Wakayama Prefecture, just south of Osaka.
The Black lacquer is called Akebono, meaning dawn, where just a subtle amount of red lacquer is used.
Akebono lacquer style was created in a time when red lacquer was expensive therefor only a little could be used. Resulting in this unique and understated beauty.
Sold separately each cup measures 10cm across x 6.5cm high

Just as these Sakē Cups caught my eye online, they are having the same effect on people now they are in use at the dinner table. Along with their attractive appearance, their texture makes them comfortable to hold, and the lip feels right in contact with the mouth. I would probably have preferred the red cups, but because they were out of stock, I was happy to take three black ones, the only number available at the time. My plan is to buy more when they come back into syock.
